With her 2010 album Shadow Stories, Ava Mendoza substantiated an impression that had been circulating for some time: She is one of a handful of musical geniuses working in the Bay Area. Working with an array of musicians such as Nels Cline, Mike Watt (Minutemen) and Carla Bozulich (the Geraldine Fibbers), Mendoza has established herself as a versatile and virtuosic guitarist. Her original compositions, as evidenced in her recordings, often quote, rearrange and derange traditional American musical idioms. In this program, Mendoza will perform her original composition to accompany the silent film The Bat. The film is a perfect fit for Mendoza’s sensibilities, a strange, genre-bending comedy/mystery about a group of greedy loot seekers who are picked off one by one by a shadowy killer called the Bat.
