Ping Pong Summer by Michael Tully
Lights, camera, action! The magic of the movies comes to the museum as the Film Society partners with NightLife for an evening of film-centric entertainment in advance of the San Francisco International Film Festival. Ever wonder about the secrets of the cinema? Or wanted to see films before they are released to the public? Meet industry insiders and get an exclusive peak at what happens behind the lens.

Catch a screening of the Oscar-winning animated short Mr. Hublot and hear behind-the-scenes insights from the film’s animation supervisor Mickaël Coëdel, who has worked on animation for Iron Man 2, and visual effects for mega-hits like Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest and Pacific Rim, among others. In the East Pavilion, view a colorfully curated selection of films, including Rodents of Unusual Size: Work in Progress (about, you guessed it, large rodents who dwell in Southern bayous), then learn about large rodents from around the world (hint: they’re not just in your nightmares!) with Academy mammology expert Liz Carlen. Plus, watch One Day on Earth, a novel, 24-hour project filmed in every country in the world in a single day, and more. See uber-hip 16mm film projections, strike a paparazzi-style pose in a red carpet photo booth, and view the Dark Universe planetarium show, playing in the world’s largest all-digital dome at 7:30 and 8:30 pm. In the Piazza, play a game of ping pong, while watching scenes from Ping Pong Summer, about one boy’s life-changing 1980’s summer vacation starring Susan Sarandon and Amy Sedaris. Plus, groove to the funk-soul stylings of Sweater Funk.
